And the Prophet ﷺ said: “Hold firmly to my Sunnah.”Sunan Abī Dāwūd (Ṣaḥīḥ)

Common questions about the Sunnah and Hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

1. What is Hadith in Islam?

Hadith are the recorded sayings, actions, and approvals of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Evidence:

“Nor does he speak from his own desire. It is only a revelation revealed.”
Qur’an, 53:3–4

2. Why is Hadith important?

Because it explains and demonstrates how to live according to the Qur’an.

Evidence:

“And We revealed to you the Reminder so that you may explain to the people what was sent down to them.”
— Qur’an 16:44

3. Is Hadith the same as the Qur’an?

No.

  • Qur’an = Word of Allah

  • Hadith = teachings of the Prophet ﷺ

Evidence:

“Obey Allah and obey the Messenger.”
— Qur’an 4:59

4. Can Islam be practiced using the Qur’an alone?

No. Core acts of worship require Hadith for details.

Evidence:

“Pray as you have seen me pray.”
Sahih al-Bukhari

5. How do we know Hadith is authentic?

Through a rigorous science of chains of narration (Isnād) and textual analysis.

Evidence:

“This knowledge is religion, so look from whom you take your religion.”
— Ibn Sīrīn (early scholar)

6. Are all Hadith authentic?

No. Hadith are classified as:

  • Ṣaḥīḥ (Authentic)

  • Ḥasan (Good)

  • Ḍaʿīf (Weak)

7. Who preserved the Hadith?

  • Companions and later scholars who memorized, verified, and documented narrations.

    Evidence:

“May Allah brighten the face of one who hears my words, memorizes them, and conveys them.”
    — Sunan al-Tirmidhī

8. What is the Sunnah?

The practical way of life of the Prophet ﷺ based on authentic Hadith.

Evidence:

“Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example.”
— Qur’an 33:21

9. Is following the Sunnah obligatory?

Yes.

Evidence:

“Whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah.”
— Qur’an 4:80

10. Does Hadith ever contradict the Qur’an?

Authentic Hadith never contradicts the Qur’an.

Evidence:
Scholarly consensus (Ijmaʿ); see Imām al-Shāfiʿī, Al-Risālah

11. Why are some Hadith difficult to understand?

  • They may require:

    • Context

    • Historical background

    • Scholarly explanation

    Evidence:

“Ask the people of knowledge if you do not know.”
    — Qur’an 16:43

12. Can Hadith be misunderstood?

Yes — without proper context.

Evidence:
ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd said people may misinterpret without knowledge

13. Are Hadith culturally bound?

No. Culture ≠ Sunnah.

Evidence:

“Today I have perfected for you your religion.”
— Qur’an 5:3

14. Do Hadith apply in modern times?

Y

Yes — because they address human nature, not time periods.

Evidence:

“I was sent to perfect good character.”
— Musnad Aḥmad

15. Can women study and did they transmit Hadith?

Yes — historically and Islamically.

Evidence:
ʿĀ’ishah (RA) narrated over 2,000 Hadith
— Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim

16. Is rejecting Hadith allowed in Islam?

No.

Evidence:

“Let those beware who oppose his command, lest a trial strike them.”
— Qur’an 24:63

17. Should new reverts read Hadith immediately?

Yes — with authentic, beginner-friendly sources.

Evidence:

“Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim.”
— Ibn Mājah

18. What Hadith should a new revert start with?

Hadith about:

  • Intention

  • Prayer

  • Mercy

  • Character

Evidence:

“Actions are judged by intentions.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim

19. Did the Prophet ﷺ command that his Sunnah be followed after him?

Yes. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ explicitly commanded Muslims to follow his Sunnah and warned against abandoning it.

Evidence (Qur’an):

“Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it; and whatever he forbids you from, refrain from it.”
Qur’an, 59:7

Evidence (Hadith):

“Whoever lives among you will see much اختلاف (difference). So hold firmly to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs after me.”
Sunan Abī Dāwūd, authenticated (ṣaḥīḥ)

Islamic Principle:
Following the Sunnah is not cultural, optional, or historical — it is a religious obligation rooted in revelation.

20. Did the Prophet ﷺ explain the Qur’an through his actions, not only his words?

Yes. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ explained the Qur’an by living it, not only by speaking about it. His daily life was a practical explanation of Allah’s message.

Evidence (Qur’an):

“Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example for whoever hopes in Allah and the Last Day.”
Qur’an, 33:21

Evidence (Hadith):
When ʿĀ’ishah (RA) was asked about the character of the Prophet ﷺ, she said:

“His character was the Qur’an.”
Sahih Muslim

Why this matters for a new revert:
Islam is not only learned from reading — it is learned by example, and the Sunnah shows how Qur’anic teachings look in real life.
